‘Road to stability in Afghanistan runs through Pakistan and India’

As the Obama administration reviews its Afghanistan strategy, a leading US daily suggests that Washington needs to understand that the road to stability in Afghanistan runs through Pakistan and India. The devastating terrorist attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul earlier in October signals a new sense of urgency to the Obama administration’s deliberations over Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s assessment of the war in Afghanistan, an opinion piece in Christian Science Monitor said. McChrystal is the top commander of US and allied forces in Afghanistan.

Jackson browne settles lawsuit with republicans

Singer Jackson Browne has settled a lawsuit with former presidential candidate Senator John McCain and the Republican Party over their use of his song Running on Empty during last year’s campaign. The settlement announced on July 21 included an apology from the GOP, which lost the election, and a pledge not to use any musicians’ work without proper permission in future campaigns, a statement that Browne said he hoped would benefit other artists.

America’s capital city has become home to the nation’s fifth largest South Asian population with ethnic restaurants, salons, perfumeries and numerous houses of worship,. Even as Washington, DC’s total population decreased by 5.7 percent between 1990 and 2000, the overall immigrant population actually increased by 25 percent, with the Asian population demonstrating a 42 percent growth.

Global Swine Flu deaths exceed 700

The World Health Organisation on July 21 said the death toll from swine flu raised to 700 globally. By comparison, seasonal flu, the common variety of influenza which normally hits during the winter months, kills about 500,000 people each year. An official at the WHO headquarters in Geneva said the organisation did not have a death ratio for the virus and was still compiling data.

A federal appeals court ordered California to release some 40,000 inmates from its state prisons over the next two years, in a finding that ongoing prison crowding violates constitutional standards for prisoner health care.
