South Africa commits to nuclear agency’s aim to create better life

South Africa has reassured the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its support for the organisation’s objective of creating a better life for all, free from the threat of the use of nuclear weapons while still using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Abdul Samad Minty, the South African representative at the IAEA, said in a congratulatory letter to Yukiya Amano of Japan, who was elected IAEA director general: “I assure you of South Africa’s full support and cooperation during your tenure as director general, as there is a collective responsibility to preserve the agency’s impartiality and integrity and to further enhance its contribution to human wellbeing.”

Nigerian Islamists have fled an army onslaught after four days of fighting that killed atleast 600 people. Boko Haram, a group called the Nigerian Taliban, launched a series of attacks on police stations across northern Nigeria July 26. The military has since struck back, killing and arresting hundreds. Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said that around 30 percent of the issues discussed in the United Nation Security Council are related to Africa, and yet no country from that continent has a permanent seat in the grouping.
