Time is our enemy but we can beat it: Fennell

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Michael Fennell said “time would be the enemy” in preparing for the 2010 New Delhi Games and announced that a high-powered tenchnical committee would monitior the monthly progress of work. After six days of inspecting the venues and the Games Village, Fennell said that all the members of the CGF after Monday’s General Assembly were convinced that the infrastructure would be ready in time for the necessary overlay installations and test events.

Two Indian weighlifters fail dope test, risk life ban

Weightlifters Vicky Batta and Shailaja Pujari have tested positive in out-of-competition dope test and face the risk of being banned for life. Batta (56 kg) tested positive in a surprise test conducted by World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) in September while Pujari (75 kg) was caught in an out-of-competition test done by National Anti Doping Agency (NADA), a source told IANS.

Henin to make Grand Slam return with Australian Open wild card

Comeback-bound Belgian Justine Henin Monday was awarded a wild card start into January’s Australian Open as she joins compatriot Kim Clijsters in reversing a recent retirement. “I spoke to Justine’s team over the weekend and was happy to grant her request for a wild card,” tournament director Craig Tiley said. “Justine is the ultimate competitor, the winner of seven Grand Slam titles.”

Serena Williams dethrones Safina atop women’s rankings

Hamburg, Oct 12 (DPA) Serena Williams of the United States returned to the top of the women’s tennis rankings in the latest list issued Monday by the WTA, dethroning Russian Dinara Safina by a mere five points. Williams has 7,945 points to Safina’s 7,940, with Venus Williams third on 6,445 points.

Delhi gets backing from Earl of Wessex for Commonwealth Games

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and vice-patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), gave a thumbs-up to India’s preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games here Sunday. Edward, who is here to attend Monday’s CGF General Assembly, went around the city to inspect various venues and the Games Village being constructed for the mega event. The Games take place Oct 3-14 next year.
