AGP leaders want to sever ties with BJP

Several top leaders of Assam’s opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have come out against the decision to continue the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They say that the AGP’s regional character would be lost if it insists on sticking to the saffron party. “We want the party to make its stand clear on this issue of aligning with the BJP. Our experience is that no national parties are able to understand and appreciate regional aspirations. In the long run, a tie up with the BJP would be detrimental for AGP’s interests,” former AGP president Brindaban Goswami said.

Cash-for-query scam: former MPs get non-bailable warrants

A city court on October 14 issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against four former MPs for not appearing before it in a case relating to the cash-for-query scam of 2005. The special judge issued NBWs against Narendra Kumar Kushwaha, Lal Chandra Kol, Manoj Kumar and Suresh Chandel besides alleged middleman Vijay Kumar Phogat, and asked them to appear before his court on Oct 28, when their bail plea will be decided.

Jayalalithaa demands central probe

Tamil Nadu’s Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa demanded a central probe into the alleged diversion of potash meant for farmers to two chemical industrial units for manufacturing fireworks. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the AIADMK leader accused the two Karaikal-based companies - Vaigai Chemical Industries and Karaikal Chlorates - of diverting potash worth Rs.4,000 crore to make fireworks and safety matches.

Sonia visits a dozen villages in Rae Bareli

Congress President and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi visited various rural areas in her constituency to talk to villagers if they have benefited from various central sponsored schemes. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson visited over a dozen villages on the second day of her three-day tour to Rae Bareil, state congress spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap singh told. She is visiting the constituency to check development works in the region.
