The hustle bustle in the Lajpat Nagar market on a Sunday afternoon is not an abnormal sight but this week it was a little special . A man was balancing a huge pile of colourfully wrapped boxes and putting them in his car , a group of giggling girls were seen relaxing with huge shopping bags by having lemon soda and a couple was busy buying utensils from a crockery shop. Diwali , the festival of lights is fast approaching and all the signs of the festival were very much visible in the market .

Bureaucrats being probed after bribery complaint: PMO

Five government departments have been asked to submit their reports on action taken against corrupt officials after India’s ambassador to the US Meera Shankar complained of millions of dollars having been paid in bribes to government officials, an official pointed out. “The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has been ordered to look into the matter and it has also been asked to coordinate with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” said a senior official in the Prime Minister’s Off...

Sino-Indian border and IAF’S advanced landing grounds

While New Delhi has no plans to upgrade the advanced landing ground (ALG) in Chushul, in Ladakh, the upgradation of the Indian Air Force (IAF)’s seven ALGs at the Sino-Indian border are going ahead as planned, in full swing. Top IAF sources said that the plan not to re-activate Chushul is because it is very near the area where India and China hold their border talks. Chushul, currently held by India, is around 50-60 kilometers from the border, parallel to Pangong, which is at the border.

NAVAL FIGHTER AIRCRAFT

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) seems all set to give Moscow the taste of its own medicine, by holding back the deal for 29 naval MiG-29K aircraft. MoD sources have confirmed to People’s Post that the paper work for the more than Rs 2000 crore has been done but the ready file is lying in MoD for the past two months and is not being taken up for further action, like the CCS (Cabinet Committee on Security) approval.

Media commission under consideration

With the proliferation of new and emerging media like Internet, Internet TV and FM radio, the government is seriously considering a proposal to set up a commission to frame comprehensive guidelines to cover all media. The charges of irresponsible reporting by some TV news channels following the Mumbai attacks in November last year has stirred the government into taking a fresh look at emerging media and ways to regulate them.

Israeli pavilion showcased latest weaponry to woo India

Israeli defence firms went all out to woo India, one of its biggest customers, at the Aero India Show held recently at Bangalore, and Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor spent considerable time at the huge pavilion, checking out some of the latest weaponry. Israel’s pavilion at the Aero-India 2009 international air show was one the biggest shows and evoked a lot of interest.

Indian woman becomes world’s first to fly Russian fighter

Suman Sharma, daughter of a retired Indian naval officer and an army colonel’s sister, became the world’s first woman to fly the mighty Russian MiG-35 fighter jet at the Aero India international air show, held recently at Bangalore. The 30-year-old also became the first civilian woman to co-pilot the American-strike fighter F-16IN of Lockheed Martin two days before the biennial event took off at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base at Yelahanka, about 20 km from here.

The Seventh Aero India show took off to a glorious start at the Yelahanka Air Base Bangaluru on the 11th of Feb. The Defense Minister in his speech declaring the show open stated that the Global slow down will not affect defence procurement and that there would be no cut back on defence expenditure. He declared that the industry in India is recession proof.
