Goa mines face closure

Goa mines face closure

Twelve mines, including one owned by Sesa Goa, face closure because of their proximity to wildlife sanctuaries. Director of Environment Michael D’Souza directed the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) through a letter dated Aug 6 to stop mines which “have not obtained any clearances from the statutory authorities”. The list of mines includes Sesa Goa mines at Codli village, two mines operated by Shantilal Khushaldas Bros at Rivona, which do not have the required clearances and sanctions from the forest department.

Human impact could save endangered bird

Human impact could save endangered bird

Human impact on one of the world’s most threatened bird species could save it from extinction, says a new study. The study by University of East Anglia (UEA) conservation experts explores the exact reasons behind the decline of the critically endangered white-shouldered ibis. Funded by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the new study was carried out in northern Cambodia, where 160-200 of the birds survive -- around half the global population.

Evolution faster in tropics than cooler regions

Evolution faster in tropics than cooler regions

Mammals living in the tropics are evolving faster than those inhabiting cooler regions, according to a new study. Previously, it had been assumed that rates of genetic change in warm-blooded animals were independent of climate. The new study demonstrates that DNA evolution occurs substantially faster in mammal species living in warmer environments, relative to those living in cooler environments. The study was led by Auckland University of Technology (AUT) evolutionary biologist Len Gillman and ...

Demand for rhino horn fuels poaching in India, Africa

Demand for rhino horn fuels poaching in India, Africa

A boom in demand for rhino horns has fuelled poaching in Asia, including India and Africa, according to a new study. About 10 rhinos have been poached in India and at least seven in Nepal since January alone -- out of a combined population of 2,400 endangered rhinos. Besides, 12 rhinos now are being poached each month in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Poachers in Africa and Asia are killing an ever increasing number of rhinos -- an estimated two to three a week, to meet a growing demand for horns be...

Endangered right whales found

Endangered right whales found

Scientists have documented the presence of endangered North Atlantic right whales with the help of underwater hydrophones that can pick up sounds from hundreds of kilometres away. The discovery is particularly important because it is in an area where these whales were thought to be extinct and one that may be opened to shipping if the melting of polar ice continues, as expected, said researchers. Scientists from Oregon State University (OSU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Crows can fashion a hook for food

Crows can fashion a hook for food

Rooks, a member of the crow family, are surprisingly innovative when it comes to searching food - they are not only capable of using tools but also making and modifying them for their use. "This finding is remarkable because rooks do not appear to use tools in the wild, yet they rival habitual tools users such as chimpanzees and New Caledonian crows when tested in captivity," said Chris Bird of Cambridge University, co-author of the study.  In a series of experiments, the rooks quickly learnt to...
