New Nepal wildlife discovery boosts yeti fantasies

New Nepal wildlife discovery boosts yeti fantasies

Almost 50 years after an expedition by Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary to track down the elusive yeti of the Himalayas failed, there is fresh hope for the existence of the mythical half ape, half man with the discovery of 350 new species, 94 of which are in Nepal alone. The World Wildlife Fund Nepal said that a biological treasure trove has been unearthed in the eastern Himalayas that includes the world’s smallest deer, a `flying frog’ and a 100 million-year old gecko.

Dry Bharatpur won’t be much of a bird sanctuary

Dry Bharatpur won’t be much of a bird sanctuary

There is an air of despair among bird watchers and officials at the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan. The rains have played truant so far and the swamps are dry. Without aquatic life, that is food for the migratory birds, many of the winged visitors may not show up this winter, which is bad news for tourism. Last year’s monsoon was good for the region, with more than 800 mm of rainfall recorded.

Goan beaches get washed away

Goan beaches get washed away

It is an abode of scenic beauty, squeezed between the seas and the lush forested hills, offering glistening sands and swaying coconut palms for a mesmeric visual delight. Lakes dry up in Udaipur, so does tourism

Lakes dry up in Udaipur, so does tourism

It’s a hard to believe sight. The lakes of Udaipur that had bestowed on this city the epithet of Venice of the East have become so dry that instead of boats, SUVs are being used to ferry guests across. What is less visible but more worrying for many in this historically rich city is its impact on tourism. Udaipur, where 40 percent of 2.5 million people directly or indirectly earn a livelihood from tourism, has five major lakes - Lake Pichola, Udai Sagar Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake, Rajsamand Lake and...

Green school amid cold desert

Green school amid cold desert

Barely 15 km southeast of Leh, the hilly headquarters of Ladakh district in Jammu and Kashmir, lies one of India’s most innovative “green” schools that operates on solar power and draws on natural elements to provide “sustainable education” to poor children. The earthquake-resistant Druk White Lotus School, made of local sandstone, poplar and willow wood, steel, glass and solar panels, straddles a sandy stretch of cold desert in Shey village, flanked by barren mountains. The school, a seat of ed...

Essence of beauty in Kerala

The beauty of Kerala appeals in many ways to people who visit there. While it is "god's own country" for some because of its scenic lushness, others think it an "embarrassment that encourages constant disorder in its politics and economy".

As author Shinie Antony writes in a new anthology, "Kerala, Kerala, Quite Contrary" there exist multiple Keralas, all volubly at loggerheads with each other – left or right? Tourism brochures or environmental quicksand?  Poised for a global role or rambling rhe...
