Indian Commerce Minster Anand Sharma says while a perfect Doha deal may not be possible, he is hopeful a “balanced and fair” trade deal protecting the interests of the poorest countries could be reached. “We have to reassure the poorest of the poor that we are all committed to work collectively for development,” he said at a conference on global services trade in Washington on October 13.

Superbikes in India override cost factor

A niche market for superbikes is quietly picking up pace in India, with enthusiasts increasingly seeking that tantalising rush of adrenaline, undeterred by the high prices of these roaring mean machines. Yamaha, the Japanese biggie, alone has sold about 125 superbikes, YZF R1 and MT01, since its launch in December 2007. Suzuki with masterpieces like Hayabusa and Intruder has sold about 100 of them since 2006, while Honda and Ducati are others in the market.

Finnair to restart Mumbai operations from Diwali

Nordic carrier Finnair is restarting its operations from Mumbai to Europe from Oct 18, with a brand new fleet of Airbus aircraft, sensing a revival in passenger demand after some trying times over the past year.The carrier has also fixed an inaugural tariff of Rs.29,900 for an all-inclusive return ticket to Helsinki and 11 European destinations with the flexibilities for rescheduling normally available on a full-fare business ticket, a senior airline official said.

Ministerial group to examine jet fuel prices

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has decided to constitute a ministerial group to look into the issue of high aviation fuel prices in India that has exacerbated the current crisis of the industry. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel made the announcement in the capital after briefing the cabinet about the prevailing situation in the domestic and global aviation industry, including the comparative cost of fuel in India and elsewhere.

Online headhunter Monster India and ITC e-Choupal, a digital platform for farmers, have tied up to launch a website for job seekers in rural India. Ratan Naval Tata, Chairman of Tata Group, on July 17, handed over the world’s cheapest car marking the commercial rollout of the jellybean-shaped small car, which has been drawing global attention since the prototype was unveiled last year. Ratan Tata who had promised to deliver what he has been calling the “people’s car” at just Rs.100,000 at factory gates, himself handed over the car keys to Ashok Vichare, a class I customs officer in Mumbai.
