IIM directors, board members to be appointed through collegium

Appointment of directors and borad members of the IIMs will be done through an independent collegium from now on, a move that will make the process broad-based, the government said. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of IIM directors with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal in which they discussed about the vision and autonomy of these prestigious B-schools.

Puppet on a string in Uttar Pradesh classrooms

Uttar Pradesh’s State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will train primary school teachers in puppetry so that they can use the traditional art form to teach classes 1 to 5. According to officials, the puppetry training programme for teachers has been undertaken by the state as a pilot project. “The main idea behind the project is to make classroom teaching interactive through puppetry,” SCERT’S joint director (training) Mahendra Singh told IANS.

Bikash Bhattacharya retrospective in Kolkata, Delhi

More than 70 works by early master of Indian contemporary art Bikash Bhattacharya will be shown for the first time since his death in 2006 in a major retrospective exhibition at the Aakriti Art Gallery in Kolkata between Aug 17-Sep 9 and at the Vadehra Gallery in the capital between Oct 6-Nov 5. Bhattacharya was credited with bringing back life-like realism in modern art in the 1960s and 70s that helped the common man identify with art as a tool of mass communication.

Digital technology has taken away the jobs of Bollywood poster painters. Designer Nida Mahmood hunted them out in dingy lanes of the capital and teamed up with them for her upcoming poster collection. “The job of film posterwallahs died around 15-20 years ago. Most of them have taken up different professions and it was very difficult to locate them. After wandering in the streets of Delhi, I found some of them but they refused to work with me,” Mahmood said. “Some others agreed.

For 44-year-old Steve Aruni, busking is a way of life. More commonly known as street performers, buskers are people who sing or perform at public places for money. Aruni is a professional, self-taught singer who has completed a quarter of a century in this field. A badge dangling from his neck states he is a licensed busker. “I love being a busker because of the freedom and peace of mind, there’s no stress involved,” Aruni told amid the hustle and bustle of the Piccadilly Circus tube station.

Art from India’s North-east, once an extension of Southeast Asian Art, is now showing the usage of photorealism, cartoon and comic techniques and other neo-contemporary styles, according to a young art researcher from the region. Art in North-Eastern India was confined to religious and traditional domains for nearly 500 years. Because of its disconnect with the rest of the country, Art from the northeast does not make headlines in mainstream.
