Fashion

Cruelty is a Virtue?

Cruelty is a Virtue?

These days – or has it always been so? – it is really hard to be kind to someone. There is a tendency in people to mind their own businesses and go their own way. This tactic can save many a times from a boring assignment at work that requires extra hours, washing extra dishes after dinner, escaping from a very talkative person etc. Modern psychiatrists – those angels that make the most devilish acts seem like unwilling acts of passion – have defined this as being independent minded and thinking rationally.

Fashion really is your attitude

Fashion really is your attitude

In an interview of the Venezuelan top designer Carolina Herrera that I read in a much prized copy of Harper’s Bazaar, I finally understood what everyone had been talking about. People just kept on saying that fashion is about who you are. Herrera said that the one piece of essential item of wear that she always relied on was a white shirt. She has had it in every collection of hers ever since she fell in love with them.

You are what you wear

You are what you wear

So my favourites are pants. Or jeans. But that’s me. I should try to bring on my own attitude when I wear those. My African friend wears her with her butt sticking out in a sexy manner while I have conditioned myself to walk upright so as to take pride in my curves. Many people like it when women of all shapes and bosom sizes walk upright with pride and don’t hunch. An apt example here would be of Queen Latifah who has stuck to her guns and whom I admire a lot.

THE TWEED JACKET

Almost 100 years ago John G Hardy founded the company which today holds the undisputed position of market leader for the supply of elegant country fabrics. The founder, being something of an eccentric gentleman, became well known for having collected his fabric samples, he would return to London with them stacked under his top hat.

The UGG Boot

The UGG Boot

Boots travelled a long way from being a staple accessory of equestrians and on a lower scale being associated with savage westerns in Southern American states. Boots were obviously the essential item in ones winter wardrobe to be worn over the jeans tucking them hence doing the double duty of providing comfort from the cold and for being fashionable.

Tastes of India spread to the sky

Tastes of India spread to the sky

Food on international flights from the country is becoming more of a home-away-from home experience for frequent fliers. You can now tickle your taste buds with a shahi Indian Thaali, gajar (carrot) halwa stuffed in pancakes and grilled masala lobsters. Menus on airlines are acquiring an Indian taste. “The palate of Indian fliers is changing. What do people expect when they are travelling out of India?

Do social networks influence fashion trends among peer groups?

Do social networks influence fashion trends among peer groups?

Do friends sport the same style in shoes or see the same movies because of their similar tastes, which is why they became friends in the first place? Or once friendship is established, do individuals influence each other to adopt similar behaviours? Social scientists don’t know for sure. They’re still trying to understand the role social influence plays in spreading of trends because the real world doesn’t keep track of how people acquire new items or preferences.

Designer Stella McCartney urges Lohan to quit fur

Fashion designer Stella McCartney has urged Hollywood wildchild Lindsay Lohan to stop wearing fur. The “Mean Girls” star has been snapped wearing animal pelts and leather on numerous occasions and McCartney, daughter of Beatles legend Paul and his late wife Linda, has asked the singer-actress to quit fur. “Lindsay wears a lot of Stella’s designs and she doesn’t want to be associated with a high-profile star who insists on wearing animal products,” said a source. A spokeswoman for McCartney added...

Young, urban and draped in that six-yard wonder

The traditional sari is making a stylish comeback in the wardrobes of young women in cities, with corporate honchos, politicians and actresses inspiring the new generation to drape it not only as evening wear but also to office. “Most of the young generation wears saris to parties, evening get-togethers because you stand out and it is a most sensual attire. It looks great on every woman, irrespective of their body type,” ace designer Ritu Kumar, known for her ethnic Indian saris, said. Kumar fee...
